B-47 Stratojet History:

The Boeing B-47 Stratojet was the country's first swept-wing multi-engine bomber. It represented a milestone in aviation history and a revolution in aircraft design. Every large jet aircraft today is a descendant of the B-47. Boeing engineers had envisioned a jet-powered plane as early as 1943. The XB-47 was proposed as early as 1945 - the final year of the Second World War - and beat out a notable flying wing design proposed by the Northrop corporation. From there, the first base B-47 Stratojet was to fly by 1947, featuring a powerful array of 6 x turbojet engines. A crew of three personnel could man the machine, which itself could undergo extensive ranges with inflight refueling.

By 1965, the B-47 system had all but run its course, now replaced by the Convair B-58 Hustler and the B-52 Stratofortress series of bombers (both aircraft detailed elsewhere on this site). Despite this somewhat average life span for operational service, the B-47 was a major contributor for the United States Air Force in terms of defense and deterrence. Serving as a capable high or low level bomber and reconnaissance operator ensured the system a good reputation and paved the way for future bomber designs capitalizing on the successes pioneered by the groundbreaking B-47.

Between 1947 and 1956, a total of 2,032 B-47s in all variants were built. Boeing built 1,373, Douglas Aircraft Co. built 274 and Lockheed Aircraft Corp. built 385.
