P 40 Tiger Shark Warhawk History:
First flew on October 14 1938, the P-40 Warhawk is a single-engine, single-seat, ground attack fighter aircraft. It was the workhorse of the Allied aerial arsenal in 1944. The P-40 Warhawk may not be as good as other new aircrafts, but it has a pretty good design. The aircraft was used in large numbers during World War II, and has adapted the airframe of the existing P-36 to enable its mass production without a long development period. The United States Army Air Corps have selected the name “Warhawk” as the official name for all P-40 models. It was the third-most numerous US fighter of World War II.
The P-40 Warhawk entered its first service with the Desert Air force in August 1941. The P-40 Warhawk proved to be an effective weapon against the best of the Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica. The P-40 Warhawk have a comparatively neat design, and was unique during its era for having a fully retractable tail wheel. One hundred and ninety-seven P-40s were built in 1939-40 for the USAAF, and a large number were also sold to Britain and France.
In November 1944, the P-40s' production has been stopped, and around 13,738 of this aircrafts had been produced. Air forces from 28 nations have used the P-40 all throughout the war. The P-40 Warhawk have provided most of its British fighter support during the North African Campaign. And its most popular operations were in China, which was flown by the American Volunteer Group or popularly known as the “Flying Tigers”.
