Orion P-3 Lockheed History:
The P-3 Orion has been the Navy’s frontline, land-based maritime patrol aircraft since the 1960s. The most capable Orion version is the P-3C, first delivered to the Navy in 1969. The P-3C Orion is a land-based, long range anti-submarine warfare (ASW) patrol aircraft. The P-3C provides effective undersea warfare, anti-surface warfare, and Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance capabilities to naval and joint commanders.
Over the years, the aircraft has seen numerous design advancements, most notably to the electronic packages the aircraft carries. The P-3 Orion is still in used by numerous navies and air forces around the world, primarily for maritime patrol, reconnaissance, anti-surface warfareand anti-submarine warfare. The P-3s were active in Afghanistan in late 2001, where the aircraft used Ku-band packet mux data links to provide video and other sensor data to surface forces. The imagery was very well received by ground forces there, and demand for this type of information is growing as users become aware of its value.
Its reputation as the ultimate submarine finder was earned through more than 45 years of service, from the Cuban Missile Crisis to round-the-clock, low-profile patrols throughout the Cold War. The P-3 remains a relied-upon asset today and has proven to be remarkably well adapted for maritime patrol in the post-Cold War world. In fact, no other aircraft is better suited.
