TBF Avenger USN History:

The TBF Avenger was designed to replace the obsolescent Douglas TBD Devastator. The prototype TBF-1 Avenger first flew on August 1, 1941. Grumman's first torpedo bomber design, the TBF Avenger beat Vought's TBU in competition. In 1942, it saw its first combat at the battle of Midway, but it wasn't until later battles that it made its mark in history. During its World War II lifespan, the Avenger design changed very little, and this allowed it to be built in huge quantities. With production reaching over 10,000 in number, the Grumman TBF Avenger would become one of the many American Classic Warbirds that "helped win the war".

The TBF Avenger was a three-seat single engine aircraft with a noticeably enlarged fuselage. The system was crewed by three personnel and could be fielded with a combination of 7.62mm and 12.7mm machine guns and 20mm cannons. Wings were straight and mounted in a low-monoplane formation. Early deliveries were without the identifiable power-operated dorsal turret but these would come on later as a welcomed defensive weapon. All bombs and torpedoes were kept in an internal weapons bay that was opened upon release of the payload. The Avenger was arguably the U.S. Navy's most successful torpedo and bomber aircraft of World War II. The Avenger also saw service in the British Royal Navy and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
