J2F Duck History:
The J2F Duck was a utility amphibian biplane manufactured by Grumman. It was primarily used by the U.S Navy and U.S Coast Guard.
The maiden flight of the J2F-1 Duck took place on April 2 1936 powered by a 750 hp (559 kW) Wright R-1820 Cyclone, and was delivered to the US Navy on the same day. Pilot Paul Hovgaard, took off from a grass strip in front of the Grumman factory at Farmingdale, NY. The J2F-2 had a Wright Cyclone engine but boosted to 790 hp (589 kW). 20 J2F-3 variants were built in 1939 for use as executive transports for the Navy with plush interiors. Pressure of work following the United States entry into the war in 1941 production of the J2F Duck was transferred to the Columbia Aircraft Corp of New York. They produced 330 aircraft for the Navy and US Coast Guard.
Several surplus Navy Ducks were converted for use by the United States Air Force in the air-sea rescue role as the OA-12 in 1948.
The J2F Duck was also one of those military workhorses in World War II. It was the aircraft that did the most tedious jobs but never got any recognition or publicity. Some said that it could have been named the “Ugly Duckling” but amidst the negative comments of people because of its appearance, the J2F Duck aircraft is one of the most remarkable aircrafts of World War II as it performed important missions when no other plane is around. When no other bomber could carry bombs, the J2F Duck does the work. When no other transport could be used, the J2F is transported. When no other photo plane could be found, the J2F Duck was photographed. And when there are no other rescuers to be used, the J2F Duck was available for the mission.
A total of 632 JF/J2F Ducks were built in all. By 1945 they were scattered all over the world, performing duties nothing short of amazing. Ducks could be seen airborne as late as the mid 1950s. There may be one or two still flying today. Probably the most famous Duck of all was J2F-6 Serial Number 33587 which starred in the movie "Murphy’s War" in the mid 1970s.
