Grumman A-6 Intruder History:
The Grumman A-6 Intruder is all-weather medium attack aircraft powered by Two Pratt & Whitney J52-P8B engines (9,300 pounds thrust each). The A-6 Intruder is a twin-engine, mid-wing attack aircraft manufactured by Grumman Aerospace. The Intruder first flew on April 19, 1960, and the first of 482 production aircraft were delivered in February 1963. In service between 1963 and 1997, the Intruder was designed as an all-weather replacement for the piston-engined A-1 Skyraider medium attack aircraft. A total 663 A-6 Intruder was built. In 1997, the last of the Grumman A-6 Intruders in service were retired after two wars and 34 years with the fleet.
The Grumman A-6A Intruder variant is an all-weather, low-altitude, carrier-based attack aircraft for land and sea interdiction and close air support (2 CREW). The first of six YA-2F1 prototypes flew on April 19, 1960 with the first of 482 production A-6As being delivered to the US Navy beginning in 1963. The Intruder played a large role in the Vietnam War, flying over 35,000 combat sorties by 1973. The A-6A introduced the new Digital Integrated Attack Navigation Equipment (DIANE), which proved to be excellent in all weather conditions. In all, 19 A-6B's were converted from A-6A standard for SAM suppression, and 12 A-6C's were converted with FLIR and LLLTV equipment for improved night-attack capabilities.
The A-6 Intruder was later replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet.
