F82 Twin Mustang History:

The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was a purposely-designed aircraft charged with the purpose of providing the U.S Air Force with a potent long-range fighter escort while allowing the pilot a much needed break with the addition of a copilot / navigator - who could take over the controls on extended flights. This design thought provided the basis for the unique-looking Twin Mustang, which was basically two P-51H model Mustangs fused at the wings, connected at the fuselage by a wing chord (housing the weapons) and a horizontal plane at rear, effectively making the Twin Mustang a twin-boom design. Controls found in each cockpit were redundant, allowing the pilots to share both piloting and weapons duty as the situation required. Its maiden flight was on June 15 1945.

The F-82 Twin Mustang, flying from air fields in Japan, was one of the first U.S. fighter aircraft flying missions in Korea. The all-weather interceptor version of the aircraft scored the original U.S. flying victories of the Korean War on June 27, 1950 by downing 3 enemy planes. Over 1,860 missions were flown by North American F-82 Twin Mustang aircraft over Korea before they were retired from combat in February of 1962. A total of 270 of all models were produced.
