F-4 Phantom Thunderbirds History:
The big F-4 fighter-bomber was gradually evolved from the F3H, with which it had no more than a configurational similarity. Despite its size and bulky look, the F-4 had excellent performance and good manoeuvrability; it was adopted by both the USN and the USAF. Early F-4's had no fixed gun, but this was corrected after combat experience in Vietnam showed the need for one. The F-4 was one of the most numerous modern combat aircraft.
F-4s saw combat in both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm and served with the air forces of 11 countries in addition to the United States. Both U.S. military flight demonstration teams, the Navy Blue Angels and the Air Force Thunderbirds, flew the Phantom II from 1969 to 1973.
Over 5,000 Phantom II aircrafts were built in 15 different models. It was spread worldwide in countries like Great Britain, West Germany, Australia, Japan, South Korea and more. A total of 2,600 aircrafts were with the United States Air Force, and 1,200 with the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The US Air Force ordered more than 2,600 F-4s.
