F-16 Falcon Thunderbirds History:
The F-16 Falcon originates in a set of specifications the United States Department of Defense issued in 1974. The deficiencies of the F-4 Phantom II in aerial combat in the Vietnam War, particularly at close ranges, shaped the specifications for the F-15. It is the largest and probably most significant Western fighter program with over 4000 aircraft built. Though no longer produced for the United States Air Force, it is still produced for export. The Fighting Falcon is regarded as a superb dogfighter with innovations such as the bubble canopy, side-mounted control stick, and reclined seat. It was also the first US fighter aircraft to match the English Electric Lightning's ability to execute 9 g (88 m/sē) turns. Although the F-16's official popular name is "Fighting Falcon," it is well known as the "Viper," the General Dynamics codename for the project during its early development.
Aside from serving with air forces in 24 different countries, the F-16 Falcon is also the current aircraft of choice of the USAF Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron. In March 1982, it was announced that the Thunderbirds would trade in their T-38 Talons for F-16 Falcons. The team sat out the 1982 airshow season to spend the year retraining and transiting over into the new aircraft. Transition to the F-16 was completed in November 1982, and the first public demonstration took place in April 1983.
In 1992, the Thunderbirds switched from to the C version of the F-16, being the last active duty unit to use the A model. The Falcon has remained with the Thunderbirds for the last 20 years, the longest performance era of any one aircraft.
