Thunderbirds F-16 Falcon History:

The F-16 Falcon is a multi-role fighter aircraft powered by 1x P&W F100-PW-220 turbofan or General Electric F110-GE-100/129 27,000 lbs thrust. Inside the cockpit, the pilot is assisted by an array of digital systems including fly-by-wire controls. The flight stick is mounted off to the side instead of a traditional center-mounted column and the multi-function displays can provide the pilot with a myriad of veiwing options. The system is very user-friendly in terms of flying, tracking and even featuring an automated landing system to boot. The United States Air Force further pushes the capabilities of the F-16 series in using it for its "Thunderbirds" air show troupe. The highly agile and maneuverable systems have proven to be quite the showcase in any air show demonstration, providing the public with a good idea of the power inherent in such a well-designed system.

Aside from serving with air forces in 24 different countries, the Falcon is also the current aircraft of choice of the USAF Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron. In March 1982, it was announced that the Thunderbirds would trade in their T-38 Talons for F-16 Falcons. The team sat out the 1982 airshow season to spend the year retraining and transiting over into the new aircraft. Transition to the F-16 was completed in November 1982, and the first public demonstration took place in April 1983.
