E-6 Mercury History:

The E-6 Mecury is an airborne command post and communications center, relaying instructions from the National Command Authority. Its role in relaying to the fleet ballistic missile submarines gives one of its missions the acronym TACAMO ("Take Charge and Move Out"). TACAMO links the NCA with naval ballistic missile forces during times of crisis. The aircraft carries a very low frequency communication system with dual trailing wire antennas.

The E-6 Mercury is derived from the 707-320 commercial airliner and powered by four CFM-56-2A-2 (F108) turbofan engines. The first E-6A was accepted by the US Navy in August 1989, sixteen were delivered up to 1992. The first E-6B was accepted in December 1997 Delivery of the first production E-6 aircraft took place in August 1989, with delivery of the 16th and final airplane coming in May 1992. The entire E-6 fleet was modified to the E-6B standard, with the final delivery taking place on December 1, 2006.
