Corsair F4U Clear Canopy History:

To allied ground forces in the Pacific, this mighty warrior was known affectionately as the "Sweetheart of Okinawa."To Japanese troops, it was known as "Whistling Death."

This inverted gull-winged, long-nosed, five-ton warplane carried United States Navy and Marine Corps pilots on 64,051 missions between February 1943 and the end of World War II, 9,581 from aircraft carriers.

The Corsair's aerodynamics were an advance over those of contemporary naval fighters. The F4U was the first U.S. Navy airplane to feature landing gear that retracted fully, in a similar manner to that of the Curtiss P-40 in that the oleo struts rotated through 90° during retraction, with the wheel atop the lower end of the strut; a pair of rectangular doors completely enclosed the wheel wells, leaving a completely streamlined wing. The design and development of the F4U Corsair can be credited largely to the innovative talent of a single man - Rex Buren Beisel. Despite his many other accomplishments, Rex Beisel will always be remembered as the creator of the never-to-be forgotten "bent-wing" Corsair.

The F4U Corsair earned a reputation unmatched in the annals of aviation history. Even today, this venerable warbird is regarded by many as one of the greatest combat aircraft ever built.
