C-9A Nightingale History:

The C-9A Nightingale demonstrates its uniqueness and versatility daily by its ability to serve not only military, but Department of Veterans Affairs and civilian hospitals throughout the world, using military and commercial airfields. It is the only aircraft in the USAF inventory specifically designed for the movement of litter and ambulatory patients.

The C-9A Nightingale served more than 660 military, Department of Veterans Affairs and Civilian hospitals, using 650 military and commercial airfields. Thus, the Nightingale depicts uniqueness and flexibility. The 375th Airlift Wing in Scott Air Forces Base operated 10 C9A for AMC. The team consisted of a pilot, a co pilot, two flight nurses, three aeromedical evacuation technicians and one flying crew chief. The C-9 was assigned to Yakota Air Base Japan for the Pacific theater, Europe at Ramstein AB and Germany.

The C-9 was capable of carrying 40 ambulatory patients and four litter patients. The C9A Nightingale had a good speed, quiet and comfort for patients. Aside from these features the Nightingale had many other special features stated as follows: An auxiliary power unit for uninterrupted air conditioning service for the patients, Hydraulically operating folding ramp for well-organized loading and unloading of patients and medical equipments, Station desk, communication panel and a control panel for the medical crew director, Aft facing commercial airline seats for ambulatory patients, Medical supply work area, Medical refrigerator for preserving whole blood and biological drugs, 28 VDC outlet located in the special care area, 11 vacuum and therapeutic oxygen outlets, A special care area with separate ventilation system for patients who have severe conditions and needs intensive care, and Ceiling receptacles for protecting intravenous bottles.
