History of the B-52 STRATOFORTRESS BIG UGLY FAT FELLOW

An everlasting image of global power which was primarily used by the United States Air Force, and one of the most durable aircraft ever designed, the Stratofortress can drop bombs or be an airborne missile launching platform. It is a strategic bomber and is commonly referred to as the "Big Ugly Fat Fellow". Manufactured by Boeing, the B52 had its maiden flight on April 15, 1952 but was introduced in February 1955. As of now eighty-five units of the B-52 are still active and nine are reserved.

On the November 23, 1645, Air Materiel Command wanted to have a strategic bomber with five plus turret gunners and six man relief crews. They also wanted the aircraft to be armed with unspecified number of 20 millimeter cannons and 10,000 pounds of bombs. On February 13, 1946, the Air Force issued the specification and presented bid invitations to Boeing, Consolidated Aircraft, and Glenn L. Martin Company to send in their proposals.
