B-17 Sentimental Journey History:

The Boeing B-17 was a heavy/strategic bomber aircraft developed for the USAAC - United States Army Air Corps. The Sentimental Journey (44-83514) is the nickname of a B-17G Flying Fortess. The aircraft's name takes after a song made very popular by Doris Day in 1945. It was converted to a DB-17G to provide services as an air-sea rescue craft, and was transferred to Eglin Field in Florida. The final military orders for the B-17 Sentimental Journey were finalized in January 27, 1959. The Sentimental Journey has a top speed of 287 mph and is powered by 4 Wright R-1820-97 Cyclones, 1,200 hp at takeoff.

On January 14, 1978, at a membership banquet for the newly formed Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, Colonel Mike Clarke announced the donation of the aircraft to the CAF for assignment to the Arizona Wing. Later that year, a competition was initiated by the local media to appoint the aircraft, which resulted in more than 800 entries, and the final choice of the name Sentimental Journey. This decision was made to take the most popular pinup image of World War II for the nose art.
