USMC AV-8B Harrier History:
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II, is a second generation, vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) light-attack jet aircraft utilized by the Marine Corps. It is powered by one Rolls-Royce F402-RR-408 Pegasus (23,800 lb). The primary mission of the AV8-B is to provide responsive close air support for the ground forces. This single-piloted, advanced V/STOL aircraft can operate from short fields, forward sites, roads and surface ships providing minimum response time to targets. The prototype YAV-8B made its first flight on November 9, 1978 while the AV-8B first flew on November 5, 1981. The first production AV-8B aircraft was delivered in November 1983.
The AV-8B is used by the United States Marine Corps. The aircraft was centered on the Marines' need for a light ground attack airplane and focused on payload and range as opposed to speed. The US Marine Corps has operated the AV-8B since 1985.
