A-10 Warthog History:
The A-10, commonly known by its nickname "Warthog" or simply "Hog", is a single-seater close air support manufactured by Fairchild Republic Company. The A-10 was the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. It is powered by Two General Electric TF34-GE-100 turbofans (9,065 pounds each).
The prototype A-10 Thunderbolt's first flight took place on May 10, 1972. The first A-10s produced flew in October 1975, and was delivered to the 355th Tactical Training Wing at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, in March 1976. The Warthog was later introduced and became operational in October 1977.
Over 367 A-10 aircraft are in service with the US Air Force, Air Combat Command, the US Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard. The aircraft variants currently in service in the US Air force are A-10 (143), and A-10C (70); Reserve A-10 (46) and OA-10 (6); ANG, A-10 (84) and OA-10 (18). A total of 715 A-10 Thunderbolt's were produced.
